Understanding dental insurance and tax relief can sometimes feel complicated. We can help you understand your available benefits and provide the documentation you need for your claim.
VHI Dental Insurance
If you have VHI Dental Insurance, you may be able to claim towards the cost of eligible dental treatment. The amount covered depends on your individual VHI plan and benefits.
Med 2 & Dental Tax Relief
A Med 2 form provides evidence of qualifying non-routine dental expenses and may be used when claiming health expense tax relief from Revenue.
Do you accept VHI Dental Insurance?
Yes. If you have VHI Dental Insurance, you may be able to claim towards the cost of eligible dental treatment.
What does my VHI plan cover?
The amount covered depends on your individual VHI plan and benefits. Before treatment, we recommend checking your VHI policy or Table of Benefits to confirm what is covered and whether any pre-authorisation is required.
How do I claim VHI Dental benefits?
If you are covered by VHI Dental Insurance, your claim process will depend on whether your dentist is part of the VHI Dental Network.
How does the VHI Dental Network work?
Dentist within the VHI Dental Network
If the dentist is within the VHI Dental Network, VHI may pay the dentist directly and you pay any balance not covered by your plan.
Dentist outside the network
If the dentist is not part of the network, you may need to pay for your treatment and then submit your receipt and treatment details to VHI through their dental claims process.
What do I need to make a VHI dental claim?
Depending on your circumstances, you may need documentation such as the following.
Your claim may require
What is a Med 2 form?
A Med 2 form is a certificate completed by your dentist for qualifying non-routine dental expenses. It provides evidence of the dental expenses you have paid and may be used when claiming health expense tax relief from Revenue.
Which dental treatments qualify for Med 2 tax relief?
How do I claim tax relief on dental treatment?
Ask for your Med 2
For qualifying non-routine dental treatment, ask your dentist for a completed Med 2 form.
You then claim the eligible expense through Revenue.
Claim through Revenue
If you are a PAYE taxpayer, you can claim health expenses through Revenue's myAccount.
If you are self-assessed, the claim is made through your annual Income Tax Return.
Do I send my Med 2 form to Revenue?
No. The Med 2 is a supporting receipt rather than the actual claim form.
You should keep the completed Med 2 and your receipts with your records, as Revenue may request them if your claim is checked.
Can I claim both VHI and Med 2 tax relief?
You may be able to claim tax relief on the eligible amount you have actually paid yourself, but you cannot claim tax relief on an amount that has been reimbursed by your health insurance.
Revenue's guidance requires deductions for amounts received or receivable under a medical insurance policy when calculating the qualifying expense.
For example, if you receive a VHI reimbursement towards an eligible treatment, the amount you claim for tax relief would generally be based on the qualifying amount remaining after the insurance reimbursement.
Can I claim with other health insurance providers?
Check your individual policy
If you have dental cover through another health insurance provider, you should check your individual policy to see which dental treatments are covered and how to submit a claim.
We can provide your documents
Your insurer may require an itemised receipt, treatment details or a completed claim form. We can provide you with the relevant treatment and payment documentation needed to support your claim.
Can Blue Poppy Dental complete my Med 2 form?
Yes. Where you have received qualifying non-routine dental treatment, ask our team about your Med 2 form.
Your dentist will complete the relevant sections so you can retain it for your Revenue claim.
Can I get a receipt for my dental treatment?
Yes. We can provide appropriate receipts and treatment documentation for your records.
What if I am unsure whether my treatment qualifies for tax relief?
Revenue determines which dental treatments qualify for tax relief. If you are unsure, check the current Revenue guidance or speak with Revenue directly. Our team can provide the appropriate dental documentation for qualifying treatment.
